A probable cause affidavit was put in place that allowed a search warrant to be executed on his property, leading to his arrest. Although he allegedly had waived his Miranda Rights and admitted to sending the messages, he claimed that he had “done nothing wrong” after his arrest. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Aug. 26. the following Monday.
Douglas-Meyers was arrested at his home in Northeast Portland on Aug. 23, by the Portland Police Bureau on the charge of luring who he believed to be a 13-year-old girl living in Marysville, California. The person he believed to be a 13-year-old girl was actually a Yuba City detective who had an online chat room persona. They were contacted by user “Willstein387,” who was identified to be Douglas-Meyers by Homeland Security investigators.
Douglas-Meyers states that he first started using chat rooms in 2020, “to blow off some steam and chat with random people.” This is in stark contrast to what he is charged with, as, according to investigators, he “engaged in both grooming behavior as well as verbal depictions of sexually explicit conduct” with who he believed to be a young girl. Douglas-Meyers is indicted with the singular charge of luring a minor, but Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Afton Coppedge wrote, “the singular charge underrepresents the number of crimes committed by [the] defendant.”
Deputy District Attorney Coppedge commented on Douglas-Meyers’ statement about how he struggles with his addiction of chatting with minors, stating that he “did not want to talk to anyone about it.” Released info from court documents reveals he “hates this side of himself” and agreed with the concern of the sixth and seventh grade students that he teaches being around the same age.
The Portland Public Schools District has stated that they are cooperating fully with police and that there is no information indicating that students were impacted by Douglas-Meyers or his actions. Douglas-Meyers’ next hearing is in November.
