Black History Month celebrates and honors the significant contributions of African American individuals throughout history, highlighting their struggles, resilience, and achievements in America. Cleveland decided to hold a very eye-catching assembly to commemorate this month.
There was an engaging assembly and initiatives, thanks to the efforts of the Black Student Union (BSU), according to Zora Forsberg, the BSU president. The BSU used a combination of outreach strategies, including student involvement in assemblies, word of mouth, and collaborations with school organizations like CARE Leadership.
“We had spotlights on important Black figures in fashion,” said Forsberg, adding that posters highlighting influential Black figures in fashion decorated the school, drawing student attention and sparking educational conversations.
At the BSU assembly held on Feb. 27, the fashion show featured students volunteering as models to showcase outfits reflecting Black cultural influence from the 2000s era, as well as information about specific eras throughout the past century.
“We’re definitely going to have more assemblies,” said Forsberg, but she mentioned they might switch up the themes to keep things fresh, keeping in mind that the fashion show held positive feedback from the junior BSU members, and the student population in general.
Our BSU organizes PTA-funded events and occasionally accepts donations from parents to support their initiatives. Those interested in contributing or learning more can reach out to the BSU directly.
Cleveland High School’s BSU is committed to celebrating Black history and culture in creative ways that resonate with the student body! Next year, look out for the next BSU organized assembly, and be ready to get involved in learning more about Black History month in Cleveland’s BSU’s dynamic ways.
