In a spirited and highly-competitive match, the Cleveland girls soccer team won 5-2 against Hood River Valley High School on Oct. 6 as junior Ella Cohen scored a hat trick to key the victory.

Hood River came out strong, creating early pressure, but the Warriors settled in and began generating chances of their own. Junior Maggie Twyman delivered a dangerous cross that Willa Ramsey fired a shot from, nearly scoring around the fifth minute. Sophomore Val Vaughan came close with a long-range effort, and Cohen followed with a strong shot that was barely saved. In the 21st minute, Cohen capitalized on a goalkeeper error to put the Warriors ahead 1-0. The rest of the half saw back-and-forth action but no more goals.
The second half was eventful and full of goal scoring from both teams. Minutes into the half, Cohen got her second goal of the game in the 43rd minute off a pass from sophomore Piper MacDonald. Junior Anouk Malbeouf added another goal just two minutes later with a left-footed strike. Junior goalkeeper Marlowe Rowland made a key save in the 50th minute, then, extraordinarily for a goalkeeper, scored a penalty herself in the 57th minute. Just two minutes later, Cohen secured her hat trick by scoring yet another goal.
Hood River responded with two late goals, but it wasn’t enough. The home match ended with a strong home win for the Warriors, making the team 2-8 overall.
