Cleveland girls’ soccer won their first round match against Beaverton 1-0 on Saturday, Oct. 28, . A second half goal from Ella Cohen gave the Warriors the convincing win over the Beavers. The Warriors defense played well throughout the match, limiting the chances Beaverton had.
Lola Pierce gave the Warriors their first chance, with her shot from distance being turned over the bar. The rest of the first half was quiet for both teams, before the Warriors turned up the tempo in the second half.
Cleveland got a chance from Cohen, whose shot was gathered by the keeper. But Cohen got her revenge when she protected the ball from Beaverton defenders and slotted it into the goal to give the Warriors the lead.
Cohen, Pierce, and Sarah Pender continued to create chances. Although the Warriors could not find an insurance goal, their defense held strong to give them the opening round victory.
The next match for the Warriors will be a home game on Halloween at 7 p.m. The Warriors will take on Central Catholic, who comfortably beat McMinnville 7-0 in the first round. The two teams previously met this season, where Cleveland won 2-0 at home. This was the first win for Cleveland against the Rams in 16 years.
