Junior Izzy Herring has been a standout wrestler this season for the Warriors. With a 21-2 record as of press time, Herring is currently the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the girls’ 170-pound weight class. Herring has an ambitious goal for this season: to win the triple crown, which is winning the state championship in all three styles of wrestling: folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-roman.
Herring stated that the season “has gone slower than last season,” but that it has been going well. “I don’t really pay attention to (the ranking), but it does feel nice,” Herring said.
This season is the second that Cleveland has had a separate girls team for wrestling. Herring said that having a separate team for girls has been helpful with the team dynamic.
“It has definitely helped make it more comfortable for girls to wrestle,” Herring said.
You can watch Herring and other Cleveland wrestlers in their next meet at the Tualatin Invitational on Jan 26.
