Nicki Minaj vs Megan Thee Stallion: Women Pitted Against Each Other Once Again

Two of the most influential female rappers, Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion, recently released diss tracks about each other, bringing up the age-old issue of women being forced into rivalry against each other.
On Jan. 26, Megan released a diss track called Hiss, where she mentioned “Megan’s Law” (a law that requires sex offenders’ records to be public) among many other digs at multiple rappers/producers. This was received especially negatively by Nicki Minaj, whose husband, Kenneth Petty, is a registered sex offender who pleaded guilty to attempted rape at age 16.
Shortly after, Minaj went live on Instagram and announced that her diss track Bigfoot would be released soon, while also claiming that Megan was bringing up “30-year-old tea from when this man was a 15-year-old child.” She added that no man could ever love Meg, and that she was lying on her dead mother.
It was at this point that many fans of Minaj (aka Barbz) said she had taken it too far by bringing Megan’s late mother into the whole situation.
Megan, however, seemed relatively unfazed. She went live on Instagram and seemed to be laughing at the whole situation, showing that she wasn’t taking it too seriously.
Three days later, on Jan. 29, Minaj released Bigfoot, her extremely controversial track aimed at Meg.
Before understanding their beef with each other we need to go back to 2020, when Megan was shot in the foot by Tory Lanez. She was frequently accused of lying (despite x-ray proof of bullet fragments in her foot) and faced awful treatment all throughout her trial. Additionally, she was targeted by male rappers like 21 Savage and Drake in their song Circo Loco when they claimed she lied about “getting shots,” referencing the violence she endured.
Minaj amplified the lying accusations in her track, saying, “How you go on Gayle King and can’t cry? Swearin’ on your dead mother when you lie.” In this verse she was referencing Megan’s CBS interview (conducted by Gayle King) about being shot, where she didn’t cry. Many others have used this as evidence that she was lying about getting shot due to her lack of emotion.
Megan also addressed the accusations of her lying in Hiss with her verse calling out people celebrating fake news, and how she perceives them as being extremely dumb people. Additionally, she rapped about how blogs were paid to lie about the whole situation for Lanez’s benefit.
However, the main point Minaj felt personally attacked by was the verse saying that people aren’t mad at Megan, they’re mad at Megan’s Law. Since her husband is a registered sex offender, Minaj took this as a dig not only to her, but to her whole family. This is arguably the only line in Hiss that is directed at Minaj, which proves the passion she felt towards defending her husband.
Minaj furthered this point with a line in her outro: “Since you think it’s funny to speak about people’s families we’ll all join in.” This also served as her justification for rapping about Megan’s mother who passed, which is something that most Barbz admitted was extreme.
Besides this being a big deal in pop-culture/celebrity drama, it shows a much bigger issue. The whole situation displays how society has convinced women to feel obligated and take partial accountability for men’s actions. The fact that Minaj felt the need to defend her husband’s record as a rapist, and direct all of her messages towards Megan is proof of this.
“I think that women should support each other. But if Nicki Minaj is siding with people who are sex offenders, then Megan Thee Stallion is in the right to be upset, or to throw shade at her,” says junior Ellie Usher, a fan of both rappers.
Junior Mattie Cross furthered this point, claiming, “Nicki Minaj and her little Bigfoot stupid stuff needs to be canceled. She needs to step down off the platform that she thinks she has and lock in, because her little fandom is going down.”
Cross added that the multiple verses about Megan Thee Stallion’s deceased mother were completely out of line. “That’s not very nice and I don’t like that.”
There are obviously many layers to this issue, and to Nicki Minaj’s stance specifically. It is not as simple as it may seem but either way, shows a major problem that women face. The real issue is men. At the end of the day, Kenneth Petty and his rape charges (along with other men and their violence against women) is the root of this feud. If society hadn’t ingrained it into women’s brains that we need to defend men and understand their violent actions, problems like this could be avoided and de-escalated.
We can argue back and forth about which rapper’s side we’re on, but what should really be addressed is how women are continuously pitted against each other. In a world filled with so much misogyny and hate, it’s crucial for women to stick together and address the larger issues at hand.

Many other followers of both Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion, like myself, feel conflicted of who to support.
Unfortunately, when men have (rape) accusations, they are defended by people.
