Photo Essay: Downtown Portland

Portland’s architecture provides a Clarion photographer a gateway to the world of photography
Clarion photo Darby Whorton
The Terminal Sales building on Morrison just past Highway 405. I’ve been wanting to get this photo taken as I really like this building, its almost brutalist architecture alongside with the big art piece on the side of the building.

Whenever I am in downtown Portland, I always look at the architecture before anything else. Before seeing the homeless, the people on the street, the cars and the many stores hanging on by threads after the pandemic and summer riots from a few years back.

The architecture of downtown has always been something I looked forward to seeing. The intricate detail on the Terminal Sales building with the same color palette repeated on the west side of downtown finds a way to catch my eye. Photographing it feels special to me as for a while, I didn’t know what to photograph or how to get into photography. I realized that architecture was my gateway into the deeper, more advanced world of photography. I am so grateful to be able to capture the beauty of Portland through my photography.
