The 67th annual GRAMMY Awards came to an end with the winners announced during the ceremony on Feb. 2 with surprising performances, shocking winners, and controversial picks. History was made as some artists set records and others became first-timers.
The biggest award is, of course, Album of the Year, won by Beyoncé’s “COWBOY CARTER.” This was Beyoncé’s first Album of the Year, despite having the most GRAMMYs out of any artist ever. She also won Country Album of the Year, becoming the first black female artist ever to win this award. This brought Beyoncé’s grand total of GRAMMYs to 35, a record-breaking amount. After years of being snubbed for Album of the Year, she had a great run with “COWBOY CARTER.”
Kendrick Lamar also swept the song awards this year with his hit diss track against Drake, “Not Like Us.” The song won a total of five GRAMMYs, including Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Rap Song of the Year. Not only was it the first diss track to win a GRAMMY, it tied for the most wins for any song ever. Kendrick has had an amazing year, winning the beef against Drake, releasing the hit album “GNX,” and headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
A surprising winner for Rap Album of the Year went to Doechii with “Alligator Bites Never Heal.” Doechii is a relatively new artist whose rise to fame started in 2020, releasing the hit song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” that blew up on TikTok. She then got signed with Top Dawg Entertainment in March 2022. “Alligator Bites Never Heal” was an experimental album, with Doechii trying a lot of different sounds and styles, experimenting with what her newfound audience liked the most. Doechii has made history as she now is the third woman to win Rap Album of the Year. Doechii was also nominated for Best New Artist, a category that had a lot of competition this year, with Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, Benson Boone, and the winner Chappell Roan.
The GRAMMYs this year had some upsets, strange nominations, and history-making wins. Beyoncé’s long-awaited win stole the show, with her record-breaking COWBOY CARTER garnering her three wins. While Kendrick Lamar shocked nobody with 5 GRAMMY wins from his hit “Not Like Us,” Doechii surprised many with her mixtape “Alligator Bites Never Heal.”
