Cleveland opened the month of October with a rocky start as they competed against PIL opponents. On Oct. 2, against Centennial on the road, they were defeated 3-1, which handed them their third straight loss, after closing out September with defeats against McDaniel and Franklin. They then beat Benson 3-0 and Roosevelt 3-0. On Oct.14, they faced off against Lincoln at home, which resulted in a 3-1 loss. The Warriors beat Jefferson 3-0 at Cleveland on Oct. 16. At the end of the regular season, Cleveland boasts a 12-11 overall record with a 3-5 league record with losses to Lincoln, McDaniel, Franklin, Grant, and Ida B Wells.
“I think the season is going good. We started off rough in league, but we’ve worked our way back up,” said sophomore libero Addy Cooley.
Cooley was the only freshman on varsity last year and has grown tremendously as a player her first two high school seasons. Senior captains Sierra Lamberth and Karina Lee had high hopes to bring the team to the state playoffs this season.
Now at #29 in the 6A rankings and winning fifth in PIL, Cleveland is in a perfect position to earn a wildcard spot to get into the playoffs. The Warriors have seen loads of growth and improvement across the board from several different juniors and underclassmen this season. No matter how this season ends, they look to be back and better than ever next season with plenty of varsity experience gained from underclassmen this season. If Cleveland gets a playoff bid, it will be the first time since 2018 appearing in the OSAA state playoffs.
