SC Tresvant, shown here vs Duncanville at the Les Schwab Invitational, made a game winning three pointer at the buzzer to give Cleveland a 72-69 win over Benson.

After the Les Schwab Invitational, the Warriors began league play, starting with a game against the Benson Techmen. The game was an exciting affair. Benson and Cleveland fought hard throughout the four quarters. With 2.5 seconds left in regulation, and the score tied at 69-69, the Warriors had one final chance. Jackson Owens’ inbound pass went to Jackson Cooper in the Cleveland back court, who sent a pass to senior guard SC Tresvant. About 36 feet away from the basket, Tresvant launched a three point shot. As the buzzer sounded, Tresvant’s shot went through the net, and he was mobbed by his teammates. The game was one of four buzzer beaters on that Tuesday night: Roosevelt, Clackamas, and Lakeridge all won their matchups at the buzzer.

Coach Sam Glasgow said, “the shot looked good going in. When he hit it, I was in shock.”

The game was neck and neck from the second quarter to the final whistle. Tresvant, the Les Schwab Invitational steals leader, led all players with 26 points, and was the reason for Cleveland’s last second win. Tresvant has previously been a defensive player, but has been increasing his scoring output this season.

The matchup with Benson was an interesting one for Glasgow, the Warriors’ coach. Glasgow has strong ties to Cleveland, as he has lived in Southeast Portland for most of his life, and he both played and coached for the Warriors. But Glasgow also was previously an assistant coach at Benson before taking the head coaching job at Cleveland this year, and he still is a full time PE teacher at Benson.

“Coaching against the school I teach at was definitely strange. Not only do I coach at Benson but I was an assistant on the basketball staff last season so I know the players and coaches well.” said Glasgow. “To be honest it was cool, but I am glad I only have to do it twice this season as I would like to see both teams be successful.”

Overall, Glasgow is proud of his team’s performance against Benson.

“I am overjoyed and proud of the resilience and heart our team showed coming back down the stretch of the game. It was a great moment for Cleveland High School basketball,” Glasgow said.

The Warriors’ next game is at home against McDaniel on Jan. 10, before they head to West Linn to take on the Les Schwab Invitational champion West Linn Lakers on Jan. 13.
