Season 3 Sports

Week of 2/28/21 – 3/6/21

Cross Country
Cross country had two meets this week. Cleveland finished third overall for both meets, competing against the likes of schools such as Franklin and Wilson. Though wearing masks whilst running is certainly adding an extra difficulty for these long-distance runners, they have trained hard and the work is paying off. Two more meets will take place this week on March 10 and 13. Results for both the past meets and future races can be found at https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/School.aspx?SchoolID=206 .

Football
The football team lost in an intense overtime against Madison on Saturday, March 6. Though there were many scoring opportunities, the final score of the game was 14-20 in favor of Madison. The atmosphere of the game was very different with no audience members but the game was live-streamed on YouTube and can still be watched at https://youtu.be/3-IUd4btmjo. While it was a disappointing loss in the last minutes of the game, it still suggests a promising season ahead. The next game is this coming Saturday at 10 a.m. against Franklin.

Soccer
The girls soccer team had two pre-season games last week. After losing to Sunset on Tuesday 0-3, they competed in a close game against Central Catholic that ended in a 0-0 tie on Thursday. While it wasn’t the start they were looking for, it still looks as though they have a promising season ahead. This week, the girls team will have two games taking place on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Lincoln and Saturday at 4 p.m. against Madison. The results of these games can be found at https://www.osaa.org/teams/35787.

The boys soccer team had three non-league games last week against Gresham, Catlin Gabel, and Reynolds of which they won all three. All of the games were close, ending in 2-1, 3-1, and 1-0 respectively. This week, league games will begin with games against Benson and Lincoln on Wednesday and Friday at 7:30 p.m., as well as a game on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Madison. Volleyball
Last week was an eventful week for volleyball players, with two matches taking place on consecutive days. Varsity won the first match 3-0 in the best of five against Franklin on March 4. The following day they lost in a close match against Lincoln 2-3. Due to COVID, spectators are currently not allowed, but games have been live-streamed on Facebook (https://m.facebook.com/Cleveland-HS-Volleyball-Streaming-101263812035820/). Having just competed in two matches last week, a lot more volleyball is to come, with the team having two doubleheaders this week on Wednesday, March 10 and Friday, March 12.
