The Cleveland Warriors’ varsity football team hoped for a strong showing against Wilsonville, but their optimism quickly faded as the Wildcats defeated the Warriors 49-7 on Sept. 14.

Two minutes into the first quarter, the game began its downhill trend when the Wildcats scored a touchdown on the Warriors. The Wildcats scored two more touchdowns and by the end of the quarter, they were up 21-0.

The second quarter didn’t get any better for the Warriors as the Wildcats scored three more touchdowns, putting them up 42-0 by halftime.

When quarter three rolled around, the Warriors stepped up their defense. This made it so the Wildcats scored only one touchdown, putting them up 49-0.

As the fourth quarter started, the Warriors gave it everything they had. Their defense was playing the best they had all game, which prevented the Wildcats from scoring any touchdowns.

The Warriors were unsure if they would score any touchdowns. However, this changed at 1:04, a minute before the end of the fourth quarter, when senior Max Gillen dashed 20 yards to the goal line after receiving the ball. Gillen scored the Warriors’ first and only touchdown.

The Warriors will be playing the Forest Grove Vikings on Sept. 21 in Forest Grove, and they hope to perform better as a team.

Wilsonville, one of the top-ranked 5A teams in the state, improved to 3-0 on the year, w

hile the Warriors dropped to 0-3.
